Calacatta Amber engineered quartz, Living-room coffee table

Calacatta quartz slabs

The white ground and bold veining of Calacatta marble, engineered so it repeats across a whole order. Twenty-four designs, all produced in jumbo and super jumbo.

Calacatta is the most specified marble look in the world, and the hardest to buy in natural stone. Quarried Calacatta varies block to block: the vein that runs through the slab on the showroom floor is not the vein that arrives on site, and on a large order that difference becomes a problem somebody has to solve at the fabricator's expense.

Engineered Calacatta exists to remove that variable. The pattern is designed, not quarried, so a kitchen specified from a sample and a hotel specified from a drawing both get the surface they were shown. It is also non-porous, so unlike marble it does not stain from wine or oil and never needs sealing.

SUNEX manufactures twenty-four Calacatta designs in Jaipur, India. They differ in the ground tone, the colour of the veining and how much movement runs across the slab, which is what the list below is for.

The 24 designs

Choosing between them

Gold veining or grey

Gold and amber veins read warm and sit well against brass, oak and warm lighting. Grey and taupe veins read cooler and suit chrome, dark joinery and daylight-led rooms. This is the decision that narrows the list fastest.

How much movement

A quiet surface with little veining is forgiving across a long run and lets joinery lead. A dramatic, heavily veined slab wants to be the thing you look at, which suits an island or a feature wall more than a full kitchen.

The ground tone

Warm white reads softer and more forgiving in artificial light. Cool white reads crisper and more contemporary. Cream and beige grounds sit closer to Crema Marfil and travertine than to classic Calacatta.

Where the slab has to go

Super jumbo at 138 by 79 inches yields longer runs and fewer joins than standard jumbo. On a waterfall island or a continuous worktop, format decides the result more than the design does.

Calacatta quartz or Calacatta marble?

Both are specified for the same look. They behave very differently once installed.

Marble remains the right answer where the client wants the material to age and change. Where the brief is for the Calacatta look to stay as specified for fifteen years, engineered quartz is the more predictable surface.

Common questions

What is Calacatta quartz?

Calacatta quartz is an engineered surface designed to reproduce the look of Calacatta marble: a white or warm white ground crossed by bold veining. It is made from roughly 90% natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, which makes it non-porous and far more consistent from slab to slab than quarried marble.

How is Calacatta quartz different from Calacatta marble?

The look is similar; the behaviour is not. Quartz is non-porous, so it never needs sealing and does not stain or etch from wine, oil or lemon. Its veining is designed rather than quarried, so the pattern repeats predictably across a large order instead of varying block to block.

What sizes do Calacatta quartz slabs come in?

Every SUNEX Calacatta design is produced in jumbo at 128 by 65 inches and super jumbo at 138 by 79 inches, in 2 cm and 3 cm thicknesses. Super jumbo yields longer runs and fewer joins on islands and continuous worktops.

Which finishes are available?

Polished, matt and leather, on any design in the collection. Polished reads brightest and shows veining most clearly; matt is quieter and hides fingerprints; leather adds a soft texture that suits darker and warmer grounds.

Does Calacatta quartz need sealing?

No. The surface is non-porous, so there is nothing for liquid to soak into. Everyday care is warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth.
